An ode to maintenance….
Are you frustrated by the amount of work you will have to do to get fit? Does it seem impossible? The good news is that there is light at the end of the tunnel. You really just need about 2 months to get to a point where you are doing less “ground work” and more “maintenance.” The workouts get easier, the pain gets less. Read on to find out what I mean.
So, somewhere along the line, I a teacher (probably in my formative grade school years) who started the class off with, “So you ALL have an ‘A’, a 100% right now, right this minute. All you need to do, is maintain it!”
Boy Howdy!!!! Did that blow my f@#$-ing mind! That changed EVERYTHING!!! You mean all I have to do is keep what I already have????
Incidentally, I used this with students when I was a teacher, and it blew some of their minds as well. One boy REALLY took it to heart and asked almost daily if he was maintaining.
After spending most of my 20’s (er, and early 30’s) sort of dabbling with exercise (couple weeks or a month being serious, then a few off, etc.) it was difficult to find a way and a reason to really get fit. It was really important after my babies were born – first, because I wanted to be able to keep up with them, and second, because I was very misshapen upon delivery. I mean, things just were NOT where I thought I’d left them – you know what I am talking about ladies. Especially, when I was slightly older than most of your baby making peers.
So, when I finally found Insanity and the calendar that you check off every day (boy, I don’t know why, but somehow that REALLY helps), I started to stay on track. Eventually, I got in the groove and loved working out, but it took a lot to get there.
The moral and happy ending to this tale, is that, if you are out of shape, and are beginning a fitness journey, it is HARD!!!! Let’s call a spade a spade here right? It is FREAKIN’ HARD WORK. Period. No buts. However, I want anyone just starting out or starting over (looking at you, new mommies), that, when you get there, it is WAAAAY easier to stay there. First, it is just easier to keep your ‘A’ than to lose it, and once you feel really good about yourself, you will want to stay that way. You also get to the point where an, um, “accidental” bag of Doritos and a pizza will not sink your ship. Oh, yes, you will pay for it the next day, but just that one day.
